Coach Builders and Carriage Works

Britain was once the world leader in Coach building.  As well as a thriving domestic industry, carriages and engines were exported all over the world. Asbestos was in common use in the industry with carriages and engines often being insulated with asbestos. The interior of the carriages were often sprayed with flock asbestos.  Asbestos exposure often occurred during the mixing and spraying process and after when the carriages were being fitted out and finished. Older steam engines often had asbestos insulation around their boilers and workers were often exposed when rolling stock was being refurbished or decommissioned.
