Acting Legend’s Legacy To Be Honoured At Asbestos Conference

31/01/2012

Hollywood legend Steve McQueen is to be posthumously honoured at the 8th Annual International Asbestos Awareness Conference in California, it has been announced.

The actor, who is famous for starring roles in films including Bullitt and The Thomas Crown Affair, died of asbestos-related disease mesothelioma in 1980 and his widow Barbara will lead tributes at the upcoming event on March 31st.

He will be honoured in the Warren Zevon Tribute part of the event, organised by the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organisation, which is named after the singer-songwriter who also lost his battle with mesothelioma in 2003.

Adrian Budgen, national head of asbestos litigation at Irwin Mitchell, said the tribute and the conference was an excellent opportunity to raise awareness of the terrible impact that exposure to the deadly material has on so many lives.

He said: “Not many people may realise that many famous names have also fallen victim to asbestos exposure, going on to develop mesothelioma and other related illnesses.

“We hope that this event, as well as the tribute for such a major icon like Steve McQueen, will be a strong helping hand towards raising more awareness of the dangers of asbestos and why steps need to be taken to protect workers and the general public from it.”
