Inquest Rules Queen Mother’s Aide Was Killed By Asbestos

28/04/2010

An inquest in Dorset has found that Sir Alastair Aird, a former aide of the Queen Mother, died of mesothelioma caused by exposure to asbestos at Clarence House.

The coroner recorded that Sir Alastair died of an industrial disease.

Sir Alastair worked for the Queen Mother for more than 40 years.

According to Sir Alastair’s wife, Lady Fiona Aird, Sir Alastair always believed he had been exposed to asbestos at Clarence House.

Asbestos is known to have been removed from Clarence House in or around 1996.

Sir Alastair’s widow ruled out taking legal action against the Royal Family but there is a chance that other employees that have been affected may seek compensation.

Adrian Budgen, partner and asbestos expert at Irwin Mitchell said: “It would seem that no one is immune from the evil effects of asbestos. Asbestos was widely used in Buckingham Palace and on the Sandringham estate, as well as in the Palace of Westminster, for insulation purposes. Sir Alastair Aird’s widow is godmother to David Cameron, so another party leader will have been affected by Mesothelioma, albeit tangentially."
