Mesothelioma UK patient and carer day 2008 - part 1

30/10/2008

The 3rd Mesothelioma UK Patient and Carer Day, supported by a grant from the June Hancock Mesothelioma Research Fund, was held in Leeds on 4th October. The day, for patients, their carers, relatives and friends, attracted over 145 attendees. The feedback was very positive and we look forward to the event next year.

One of those who attended was Debbie Brewer, thought to be exposed to asbestos through her father’s clothes. An account of her experience of the day can be found in the mesothelioma UK newsletter.

Some of the speakers at the event included the Consultant thoracic surgeon John Edwards, who spoke about the historical origins of mesothelioma and the treatment options available today. He said, of these types of medical trials, that “we stand on the shoulders of the patients that came before us…” It is not just current patients that could benefit but futures ones. Dr Edwards went on to talk about the reality of taking parts in trials, symptom control techniques and Extra Pleural Pneumonectomy (EPP).

Dr Jeremy Steele described what caused mesothelioma and what exactly asbestos was. Geraldine Coombs gave insight into the legal rights and compensation that mesothelioma patients are entitled to.

For further information on this very successful and informative day please view Debbie Brewer’s account in the Mesothelioma UK newsletter October 2008.
